Heritage-Driven Scent Philosophy
Some creations go beyond simply smelling beautiful. They become an invisible bridge, connecting memory, place, and the inner life. “Nhã” (LotuScent) – Vietnam Airlines’ first signature scent, is one of those rare works: a refined olfactory emblem crafted by Perfumer Rei Nguyen, the creative force behind R Parfums.
Alongside the making of R Parfums, Rei Nguyen has remained committed to one pursuit: finding beauty in the depth of local culture, and translating it through scent. For Rei, fragrance is an invisible yet powerful language, one that anchors emotions in their most instinctive form.
“LotuScent” is born from that mindset. Often described by the media as a breath of Vietnamese culture, a fragrance ritual, or a symphony of heritage notes, the scent reflects an intention that goes beyond perfumery: to elevate Vietnamese identity through a sensory experience.
Created as the signature scent for Vietnam’s national flag carrier, “Nhã” carries a name that evokes grace, elegance, and refinement – qualities deeply associated with Vietnamese character and hospitality. Within the cabin, it becomes a first point of contact: a sensory cue that welcomes passengers into a story of heritage from the moment they step onboard.
Where Lotus Meets Heritage
Inspired by the Lotus – a symbol of purity, calm, and nobility, the creation of “LotuScent” wasn’t simply a formula to be finalized. It was an immersive process. Over nearly a year, Rei Nguyen observed how the scent evolved across different spaces, climates, and moments, refining it until it felt true to its purpose.
A Composition of Three Regions
The fragrance unfolds like a sensory journey across Vietnam.
It opens with a clean, sunlit brightness: Thanh Trà pomelo, Lai Vung tangerine, and Đoan Hùng pomelo – a fresh first impression that reads like a warm greeting, waking the senses with natural clarity.
As the fragrance unfolds, it reveals an unexpected Vietnamese signature: Vòng Village green rice flakes – tender, wholesome, and deeply nostalgic. Through the artistic lens of the perfumer, green rice becomes more than a culinary memory; it transforms into an evocative scent-texture, a new olfactory touchpoint that feels intimate and familiar.
At the heart is Tam Cốc lotus: serene, gentle, and poised. Here, lotus becomes both symbol and soul: a refined core that aligns with the Golden Lotus identity of Vietnam Airlines, guiding the senses into a sense of purity and calm.
The lingering finish is Thái Nguyên oolong tea: deep, elegant, and lasting. It hints at Vietnam’s culture of hospitality: the warmth of being received, the softness of conversation, the comfort of being remembered.
An Olfactory Greeting
Together, these layers form a greeting through scent: deliberate, respectful, and emotionally precise. Drawing on insights into passenger behavior and emotion, from first-time international visitors discovering Vietnam, to overseas Vietnamese returning with longing, each accord is shaped to hold two experiences at once: the thrill of departure and the relief of coming home.
The Philosophy of Feeling
The presence of “LotuScent” on board is more than a branding gesture. It is an emotional signature.
Rei Nguyen shares the spirit of the scent:
“For our international guests, Vietnam Airlines’ scent is a gentle welcome, and a lingering goodbye, so that each traveler carries home a beautiful memory of Vietnam. For Vietnamese people, encountering ‘Nhã’ on Vietnam Airlines feels like coming home.”
Rei Nguyễn
This sensitivity – in both material selection and emotional resonance, is the philosophy Rei carries from “LotuScent” into every creation. At R Parfums, each creation continues to embody these values: every scent holds a story, a distinct identity that cannot be replicated.
The success of “Nhã” marks the beginning of a larger journey, one where contemporary artistry meets the spirit of Vietnamese heritage – envisioned through the lens of contemporary artists of our time.
