R Parfums · Independent perfume house · Saigon

Time leaves a fingerprint.

A scent opens on your skin, layer by layer. The bottle keeps time as well: in brass that goes on turning in the air of your room, or in a glaze that carries the mark of its firing.

Pluviophile in the Patina bottle: three brass pieces on the glass, one turned green, on a dark ground
Pluviophile, Patina 50 mlChapter II

R Parfums is an independent fragrance house from Saigon, Vietnam. Rei Nguyen composes its six eaux de parfum, each in two 50 ml bottles: Patina on Brass, its plate corroded and polished by hand, and Ceramic, closed with a clay cap glazed and fired in a kiln. Smell all six at our three houses in Ho Chi Minh City, open every day.

About R Parfums

Two clocks

One on the skin, one on the brass

Choose a moment. The first clock follows Pluviophile as it opens on skin. The second follows the brass plate on its bottle.

Clock one · on skin · Pluviophile

Green Leaves · Rain · Rhubarb

Rain has just reached the skin.

IIIIII
A diagram, not a photograph. Each plate turns in its own way.

Clock two · on brass · Patina bottle

Fresh from the hand

Piece II has only begun to turn. No other plate carries quite the same marks.

Piece I keeps its brass. Piece III has turned completely. Piece II was set midway in its turn.

Perfumer’s memo

Pluviophile

Rei Nguyen in a white top, holding a scent strip; in front of her, a fan of strips on a stand and a brass vase of orange flowers

“Pluviophile” means “a rain lover” in Greek.

One afternoon in Shinjuku Gyoen in Tokyo, I sat on a wooden bench and watched silver rain tremble across the lake. A cool wind carried the scent of wildflowers. Somewhere nearby, the bees were still humming.

Rain lovers know such simple joys. To be alone in the rain can also be a kind of happiness, can it not?

Craft

How the two bottles are made

Patina. The idea came from relics in Huế; twelve months of research and development went into the Patina line. On the bottle, the gold of the perfume, shining through the glass, holds the three pieces together. A UV-resistant coat slows the change; it does not stop it.

Ceramic. At the studio where our caps are made, liquid clay is poured into white moulds. Each sphere is trimmed, sponged smooth and left to dry, then brushed with a raw glaze that goes on pink, and fired. The true colour only shows once the cap comes out of the kiln.
