Perfumer’s memo

“Where the moon meets the sun. Where yin and yang look into each other.

Pure as day is night. A place where every element is allowed to take its true role, and to be set exactly where it belongs — just as Moriarty chooses to stand in the dusty night mist of London.

I call this the radiance of darkness.”

Rei Nguyen, perfumer · memo for Shadow Éclat

The scent inside

An imperfect soul, proud and full of presence

Shadow Éclat explores suede leather against the soft herbal calm of geranium, with the smoky honeyed facets of osmanthus and immortelle. The suede is rendered with restraint, like an elegant dark tone moving through shadow.

Patina or Ceramic, the scent inside is the same.

  1. Top Green Mandarin, Ozone, Magnolia
  2. Middle Geranium, Rose, Iris, Osmanthus Absolute
  3. Base Immortelle Absolute, Black Pepper, Suede Leather

Chapter IV · Chapter V

The other half: 221B

If 221B is the light, drawn from Sherlock Holmes, Shadow Éclat is the darkness, drawn from James Moriarty. Rei built both from a shared palette of raw materials, set in a different balance, so that each is completed by the other.

Chapter IV · Light · Woody Leather

221B

Leather in clean, polished lines, softened by the honeyed sweetness of rose; tobacco folded into osmanthus. Sherlock Holmes.

Letters from 221B Baker Street: Scents of Shadow

Shadow Éclat first appeared here, in Moriarty’s room, with 221B in Sherlock Holmes’s. The pair was shown together again at Light and Shadow, in Hanoi, in February 2025. Rei’s greeting and eight stories from the exhibition can be heard in Vietnamese and in English.

The Ceramic bottle

Changed once, by fire

The brass on the Patina bottle was corroded, filed and polished. The Ceramic cap changed once, in the kiln, and stays as the fire left it.

  1. Open white moulds with round hollows, stacked, a cream sphere in one corner
The mould Open moulds, stacked, each hollow the shape of a cap.
  2. Close-up of an unfired clay sphere with a black and white patterned band at its opening, beside a carving tool
The opening A fine tool at the opening, before the clay dries.
  3. A tray of clay spheres: one row already brushed with pink raw glaze, the rest still white
The glaze Raw glaze goes on pink, one row at a time.
  4. Glazed spheres in a row at eye level inside the kiln, heating wires blurred behind
The kiln In the kiln, lined up for the firing.

Why this cap

I · Clay and mould

Liquid clay is poured into white moulds, which give every cap the same round form.

II · The opening

Once out of the mould, each sphere has its opening cut with a fine tool and wiped smooth with a sponge. Then the spheres dry in rows on trays.

III · A glaze after Chu Đậu

The glazes look back to Chu Đậu, the old ceramics of northern Vietnam. Brushed on raw, the glaze is pink. Its colour appears only in the kiln.

IV · Fired in the kiln

The fire fixes the colour. Afterwards a glaze reads one way by a window and another under a lamp, and it varies a little from one firing to the next.

Last, its tassel, finished by hand, and a small ceramic charm engraved with R go into the box.

What you see

The studio and its long table. Clay kneaded on plaster. Liquid clay poured into white moulds. The opening of each sphere cut and wiped by hand. Rows drying on trays. Pink raw glaze brushed on. The kiln. The spheres after the fire, in colours the pink gave no sign of. Last, the box, dressed with a tassel and a charm.

Shadow Éclat in the Patina bottle, with the brass pieces on the glass

Same scent in Patina

Shadow Éclat, Patina on Brass, 50 ml

The same Shadow Éclat, with three brass pieces corroded, filed and polished, then set on the glass. The idea came from relics in Huế; twelve months of research and development went into the Patina line. Its shade is Brown Blue Patina, the deeper one Shadow Éclat shares with 221B and Béton Chaud. Each bottle is one of a kind.

Will my cap look like the photograph?
Not exactly. The kiln sets each glaze and the maker’s hand each tassel, and neither colour can be requested. A glaze also changes with the light and from one firing to the next. Every bottle carries a ceramic charm engraved with R.
How is Shadow Éclat related to 221B?
They are a pair from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes: 221B is the light, drawn from Sherlock; Shadow Éclat is the darkness, drawn from Moriarty. Both use a shared palette of raw materials in a different balance. Shadow Éclat was first shown at the 221B exhibition in December 2024. Each is sold on its own. 221B
Is there a smaller size?
Yes: Shadow Éclat comes in 12 ml, a slim glass bottle of its own, at 1.285.200 ₫US$50, or as a 2 ml sample at 224.640 ₫US$9. It is not yet part of the Discovery Set. Smaller sizes
