About R Parfums, in one paragraph

R Parfums is an independent fragrance house from Saigon, Vietnam. Its six eaux de parfum are composed by the perfumer Rei Nguyen, each from a place or a story, and each comes in a choice of two 50 ml bottles: Patina on Brass, with three pieces of brass worked by hand, and Ceramic, with a cap of glazed, kiln-fired clay. R Parfums has three houses in Ho Chi Minh City, the first opened in July 2022, and outside Vietnam it is sold only through official distributors; at present there is one, Taigrance, in Taipei.

The six scents, by chapter

I · Eau de Hajime · Chypre Floral. The first fragrance Rei Nguyen made; Hajime means “the first time” in Japanese. Pear and narcissus over oakmoss. Key note: pear, about 0.1% of the formula.
II · Pluviophile · Green. An afternoon of rain over the lake at Shinjuku Gyoen in Tokyo. Key note: geosmin, a light trace of earth in the rain, at less than 0.01% of the formula.
III · Nostalgic March · Floral Fruity. An old Hanoi custom: sugarcane infused with pomelo blossom, served with afternoon tea. Key note: pomelo blossom, with sugarcane at the top and rice tea in the middle.
IV · 221B · Woody Leather. Sherlock Holmes, and his address on Baker Street. Clean leather softened by rose. Key note: damascenone, a molecule found in rose oil.
V · Shadow Éclat · Modern Leather. James Moriarty; made as the shadow to 221B, from one palette of raw materials in a different balance. Key note: suede leather, kept soft.
VI · Béton Chaud · Spicy Amber. Childhood summers watching kites from inside sun-warmed concrete pipes; béton chaud is French for “hot concrete”. Key note: cumin, against the cool edge of star anise.

The two bottles

Patina on Brass: three pieces of brass, coloured, filed and polished by craftspeople in Vietnam, then set on the glass and sealed under a UV-resistant coat. When the plate is set, one piece is still brass, one has turned fully to patina, and one is caught midway, so every bottle is one of a kind. The idea began with relics in Huế; twelve months of research and development went into the line. Two shades: Verde Patina for Eau de Hajime, Pluviophile and Nostalgic March; Brown Blue Patina for 221B, Shadow Éclat and Béton Chaud. On film: Series #1, The Patina Bottle.
Ceramic: a small sphere of fired clay closes the bottle. At a ceramics studio in Vietnam, liquid clay is poured into white moulds, each mouth is cut one at a time, and the glaze goes on pink; the kiln, at 1000°C, decides the colour, which recalls Chu Đậu ware. A hand-finished tassel and a two-sided ceramic charm, the R logo on one face and the name of the scent on the other. On film: Ceramic and fire, 1:29.

July 2022: the first house opens at 34 Nguyễn Duy Hiệu, with five scents and the first Patina bottles.
30 September 2022: High Society Chapter 07, A Batch of Tasting Notes, with L’Officiel Vietnam, at 34 Nguyễn Duy Hiệu.
30 September 2023: High Society Chapter 08, “Exquisite Scent”, with LITI Florist and L’Officiel Vietnam, at Bean There.
19–31 July 2024: Pluviophile, The Rain Lover, the first scent exhibition, at 34 Nguyễn Duy Hiệu: seven stories of rain, each told as a scent made for it, with the writing contest “Rain Stories”.
9–10 August 2024: Olfactory Omakase, two evenings with chef Andy Huỳnh at Oku, Regent Phú Quốc, each dish paired with a scent inspired by Phú Quốc.
6–15 December 2024: Letters from 221B Baker Street: Scents of Shadow, at 34 Nguyễn Duy Hiệu. Eight stories, read in two languages; the eighth became Shadow Éclat.
14–20 February 2025: Light and Shadow, at TÁCH Spaces, Hanoi: the first exhibition in Hanoi, with 221B as the light and Shadow Éclat as the shadow, a short story by Rei Nguyen and the writing contest “A Letter to Self”.
July 2025: three years at 34 Nguyễn Duy Hiệu.
16–17 August 2025: R Parfums scents at Wedding Symphony 2025, Hilton Saigon.
2–5 April 2026: Notes Shanghai 2026, booth H11, West Bund International Convention and Exhibition Center, Shanghai: the first exhibition abroad.
16 July – 9 August 2026: Pluviophile, Chapter 2, at 34 Nguyễn Duy Hiệu, two years after the first, with five new compositions.

Writing the names

R Parfums, in that form.
Rei Nguyen in English and other Latin-script languages; Rei Nguyễn in Vietnamese.
Shadow Éclat and Béton Chaud keep their accents. 221B is written as one word.
The bottles are Patina on Brass (in Vietnamese, Patina) and Ceramic (in Vietnamese, Gốm).

The perfumer Rei Nguyen composes all six. Eau de Hajime was the first fragrance Rei made.
