The other 50 ml line is Patina on Brass: three pieces of brass, corroded and polished. The six scents are the same in both.

The making

How a Ceramic cap is made

From clay to cap, photographed at the studio where our caps are made. The mould gives the sphere its shape and the kiln gives it colour; in between, each opening is cut and sponged, one sphere at a time.

  1. A hand pouring cream-coloured liquid clay from a jug into a row of white mouldsI

    The mould

Liquid clay is poured into white moulds. Opened, each one gives up a sphere the colour of cream.

  2. A green tool cutting the opening of a small clay sphere held in the hand, a sponge and crumbs of clay beside itII

    By hand

The opening that will sit on the neck of the bottle is cut with a small tool, one sphere at a time, then wiped smooth with a sponge.

  3. Fired ceramic spheres in blue-grey, brown, glossy black and speckled blue, with cream ceramic discs, on dark woodIII

    Glaze and fire, at 1000°C

Raw glaze goes on pink. The kiln turns it to a colour of its own that recalls Chu Đậu ware from northern Vietnam, a little different from one firing to the next.

  4. Pink on the brush. Another colour out of the fire.

Questions

About Ceramic

Does each Ceramic cap look the same?

No. You choose the scent; the kiln and the maker’s hand decide the rest. Each cap leaves the fire with its own shade of glaze, and a glaze moves with the light, so the photographs are a guide to colour, not an exact match. Every bottle carries a tassel and a ceramic charm engraved with R.

How is the ceramic cap made?

Liquid clay is poured into white moulds to form a sphere. Its opening is cut with a small tool and wiped smooth, the spheres dry on boards, and raw glaze, pink at this stage, is brushed on. In the kiln the glaze takes its final colour. The film Ceramic and fire (1:29, silent) shows each step. Watch the film

Is the scent the same as in the Patina on Brass bottle?

Yes. Each scent has one story and one set of notes, whichever bottle it is in. Only the bottle changes.

Is there a smaller size?

Yes. Each scent comes in 12 ml, from 1.069.200 ₫, and as a 2 ml sample, from 194.400 ₫. The Discovery Set holds five 2 ml vials for 918.000 ₫. All prices incl. 8% VAT.Yes.
