The dark half

Where it began

Shadow Éclat was first shown in December 2024, as the eighth story of Rei’s exhibition Letters from 221B Baker Street: Scents of Shadow, at 34 Nguyễn Duy Hiệu. For it she wrote a short story: a November night under a supermoon, an attic far from the city, sample 53, which will go no further, and a black cat that answers to Professor Moriarty.

Later, in February 2025, the scent went with 221B to Hanoi, for the exhibition Light and Shadow.

How it unfolds

A leather scent puts the smell of worked hide at its centre. In Shadow Éclat that hide is suede, softer than polished leather, set among flowers, honeyed osmanthus and black pepper. The scent is the same in the Patina and the Ceramic bottle.

On skin

Opening: Gentler than you might expect of a scent drawn from Moriarty: clean air, and a little light.
Middle: The light fades slowly, and the darker notes begin: iris, geranium, rose.
Dry-down: The smoky, green side of the leather comes through, and the scent settles deep and quiet.

Top notes: Green Mandarin, Ozone, Magnolia They open it: the first breath of a night just falling, clean air and the last of the light.
Middle notes: Geranium, Rose, Iris, Osmanthus Absolute They hold its heart: geranium lays down a soft herbal calm, osmanthus adds smoke and honey, and iris and rose leave it half mystery, half romance.
Base notes: Immortelle Absolute, Black Pepper, Suede Leather They carry it into the dark, where it is richest: immortelle brings warmth, black pepper a little heat, the suede its softness.

Two scents from one palette of raw materials, set in an entirely different balance. 221B leans on crisp leather, rose and tobacco; Shadow Éclat on suede, green geranium and immortelle.

A cap of fired clay

A round ceramic cap in a glaze that recalls Chu Đậu ware. The kiln decides the glaze and the maker’s hand the tassel, so each Ceramic bottle comes to you as it was finished.

Each cap is cast in a mould, its mouth cut and sponged, then dried, glazed and fired. The glaze shifts with the light, and from one firing to the next. How a Ceramic cap is made →

What does Shadow Éclat smell like?

Shadow Éclat, by R Parfums, is a soft, restrained suede leather. It opens clean on green mandarin, ozone and magnolia, finds its voice in geranium, rose, iris and osmanthus, and settles on immortelle, black pepper and suede. Its family is modern leather; its concentration, eau de parfum.

Is it related to 221B?

Yes, the two were made as a pair. 221B is the light, drawn from Sherlock Holmes; Shadow Éclat is the shadow, drawn from Moriarty. Both use one palette of raw materials in a different balance. Shadow Éclat was first shown in December 2024, at Rei’s exhibition Letters from 221B Baker Street: Scents of Shadow. Read their chapter.
