A glaze also reads differently by daylight and lamplight and varies a little from one firing to the next, so your cap will differ a little from the photographs.

Kissed by fire

On the Patina bottle, the colour is worked into the brass. Ceramic takes its colour once, in the kiln, and keeps what the fire gave it.

I · Clay

Cast, then finished by hand

At the ceramics studio we work with, each cap begins as liquid clay poured into a mould. Once out, its opening is cut and wiped smooth.

II · Glaze

After Chu Đậu

The glazes recall the ceramics of Chu Đậu, in northern Vietnam. Raw, as it is brushed on, the glaze is pink; only the fire gives it its final colour.

III · Fire

The kiln, then light

Once fired, the colour is set for good. It still reads differently by a window and under a lamp, and varies a little from one firing to the next.

IV · Finish

Tassel and charm

A tassel left to the maker’s hand, and a small ceramic charm engraved with R, the mark of the house.

How a Ceramic cap is made

The mould

Liquid clay is poured into a row of white moulds.
The opening

The opening of each sphere is cut with a hand tool, then wiped with a sponge.
Raw glaze

Thick and pink in the bowl, with no hint yet of the colour it will become.

What you see

The studio and its long table. Clay kneaded on plaster. Liquid clay poured into white moulds. The opening of each sphere cut and wiped. Rows drying on trays. Pink raw glaze brushed on. The kiln. The spheres after the fire, in colours the pink gave no sign of. Last, a box dressed with a tassel and a charm, and a finished cap.

A present from the garden

In old Tràng An, sugarcane steeped in pomelo blossom was set out with afternoon tea. Few people remember it now.

Nostalgic March rebuilds that afternoon: pomelo blossom like a thin veil of silk, the clear sweetness of sugarcane, fragrant rice tea. Three notes rarely found together in perfume, softened by a layer of musk. The sweetness owes nothing to vanilla or caramel. It comes from cane, tea and blossom.

The bottle changes nothing inside it. Patina and Ceramic hold the same Nostalgic March.

I named this fragrance “Nostalgic March” not because Tràng An has disappeared, but because the ritual of that season has begun to fade.

The idea came from relics in Huế; twelve months of research and development went into the Patina line. Each bottle is an original, made for one owner.
