The kiln decides the glaze and the maker’s hand the tassel, so each Ceramic bottle comes to you as it was finished. Every Ceramic bottle carries a ceramic charm engraved with R. The colour of a glaze shifts with the light and from one firing to the next, so your cap will be close to the photographs, not identical to them.

Why this cap

Clay, fire, glaze

The same rain, kept a second way. Patina carries its change in three brass pieces. Ceramic was changed once, in the kiln, and keeps what the fire left.

  1. A hand pours liquid clay from a jug into a row of white moulds
The mould Liquid clay is poured into rows of white moulds, and the excess is tipped back out. Each cap begins here, as a small hollow sphere.
A green tool opens the mouth of an unfired clay sphere, beside a sponge and clay crumbs
The opening Out of the mould, the mouth of each sphere is cut by hand and the surface wiped smooth with a sponge. Then the rows are left to dry.
  2. A bowl of thick pink raw glaze seen from above, on dark wood
The glaze The raw glaze goes on pink, brushed over each dry sphere. Its colour appears only after the firing.
Glazed spheres in a row on a kiln shelf, heating elements soft in the background
The kiln On the kiln shelves the clay becomes ceramic and the glaze fuses to it. After this, the cap does not change.
Two hands hold the Ceramic bottle against linen: black glaze cap, black tassel, ceramic charm with R
One finished cap, its glaze set by the firing, with its tassel and the charm engraved with R.

A glaze that recalls Chu Đậu

The glazes look back to Chu Đậu, the old ceramics of northern Vietnam. Each cap comes out of the kiln in its own shade.

Light and firing

A glaze reads one way by a window and another under a lamp, and its colour shifts a little from one firing to the next. That is why every image on this page is a photograph of a real cap, not a colour painted flat.

Tassel and charm

The tassel is finished by hand, with a small ceramic charm engraved with R.

How a Ceramic cap is made

Ceramic and fire

At the studio where our caps are made, from a slab of clay to a cap set beside its bottle.

Ceramic and fire · 1:29 · silent

What the film shows: the studio’s long worktable, then a slab of fine clay. Liquid clay is poured into white moulds and the excess tipped back out. Each small sphere is cut at the mouth and wiped with a sponge, then left in rows to dry. The raw glaze goes on pink. The spheres are set on the kiln shelves and fired, and come out in their fired colours. Last, a tassel and a ceramic charm engraved with R are set into the box beside the bottle.

The scent inside

A Rain Reverie

Pluviophile: one who loves the rain. It opens on green leaves, rain and rhubarb, the moment the first drops land. Then violet, ylang-ylang and bluebell, wild flowers caught in the shower. Slowly it settles into musk, anise and clove.

The bottle changes nothing inside it. Patina and Ceramic hold the same Pluviophile.

From the perfumer

“Sometimes I still can imagine myself sitting on that wooden bench in Shinjuku Park, watching the falling rain. My heart was light and my mind flowed with the water. It was strange that I never felt lonely in the rain.”

Rei Nguyen, perfumer, on the rain behind Pluviophile, writing in the Journal in 2023

Chapter II · What the eye does not see

< 0.01%

Geosmin

The compound behind the smell of soil when rain first falls. In the Pluviophile formula it is less than 0.01%, not even one part in ten thousand: a light trace of the earth in the rain.

Pluviophile in the Patina bottle, the brass pieces on the glass

The same scent, in Patina

Pluviophile, Patina 50 ml

The other way to keep the rain: three brass pieces, corroded, filed and polished, then set on the glass. On Pluviophile, the green-blue of the patina meets the pale blue of the scent. The idea came from relics in Huế; twelve months of research and development went into the Patina line. Each bottle is one of a kind.

Questions

Asked often

Something we have not answered? Call +84 89 649 0038 or write to info@r-parfums.com.

Does Pluviophile smell of rain?
Rain is one of its top notes, with green leaves and rhubarb. The formula also holds geosmin, the compound behind the smell of soil after rain, at less than 0.01%. Violet, ylang-ylang and bluebell form the middle; musk, anise and clove, the base.
Will my Ceramic cap look like the photograph?
Close to it, not identical. Each cap takes its glaze from the kiln and its tassel from the maker’s hand; neither colour can be requested. The colour of a glaze also shifts with the light and with each firing, and every bottle carries a ceramic charm engraved with R.
Is there a smaller size?
Yes: Pluviophile 12 ml, 1.069.200 ₫US$45; a 2 ml sample, 194.400 ₫US$8; or the Discovery Set of five 2 ml vials, Pluviophile among them, 918.000 ₫US$35. All incl. 8% VAT. Smaller sizes
