Their scent, not yours.
When you give a perfume, it is easy to choose by your own nose. But they are the one who will wear it. So start with what you know about them: they stop when it starts to rain, they still miss Hanoi in pomelo-blossom season, they have just begun something new, they reread Sherlock Holmes. Each scent here begins with one story like that.

For someone who loves things made by hand
The scent inside is the same. What changes is the bottle.

Patina on Brass carries three pieces of brass on the glass, coloured, filed and polished by craftspeople in Vietnam. One is left bright, one has turned fully to patina, one is caught midway. No two plates come out alike, so each bottle is one of a kind. The idea came from relics in Huế, streaked with moss and worn metal, and twelve months of research and development went into the line. A UV-resistant coat seals the plate, and the patina goes on changing, slowly. No particular care is needed. Eau de Hajime, Pluviophile and Nostalgic March wear the green-blue Verde Patina; 221B, Shadow Éclat and Béton Chaud, the deeper Brown Blue Patina. How it is made: the Patina bottle.

Ceramic is closed with a small sphere of fired clay. At a ceramics studio in Vietnam, liquid clay is poured into white moulds, each mouth is cut one at a time, and the glaze goes on pink. The kiln, at 1000°C, decides the final colour, which recalls Chu Đậu ware. The tassel is finished by hand, and a two-sided ceramic charm carries the R logo on one face and the name of the scent on the other. The kiln decides the glaze, the maker’s hand the tassel: no two are quite alike. How it is made: Ceramic and fire.
Ceramic: Currently unavailable · expected back late November. To hear when it returns, leave your email under “Tell me when Ceramic is back” on the Ceramic page.

Six scents, six beginnings
Pluviophile, for someone who loves the rain
Pluviophile is a green eau de parfum drawn from an afternoon of rain over the lake at Shinjuku Gyoen in Tokyo. Green leaves, rain and rhubarb open it; violet leaf, ylang-ylang and bluebell follow; musk, anise and clove lie beneath. A trace of geosmin, a compound made by bacteria in soil, adds the smell of wet earth. On the skin it keeps the order of a shower: the rain first, the flowers next, the shelter last.
“Pluviophile is for those who seek peace in the tranquility of rain.”
Rei Nguyen, in the Journal, 2023.
Eau de Hajime, for someone at the start of something
Hajime means “the first time” in Japanese, and Eau de Hajime was the first fragrance Rei Nguyen made. It is a chypre floral: petitgrain, pear and bergamot open onto rose, sambac jasmine and narcissus, over patchouli, labdanum resin, oakmoss and amber. It does not reach for attention. It opens fresh, turns to flowers, and settles warm.
Nostalgic March, for someone who misses Hanoi
Nostalgic March comes from an old Hanoi custom: peeled sugarcane laid among pomelo blossoms until it took their scent, then eaten in the afternoon with tea. Pomelo blossom, sugarcane and raspberry open it; magnolia, rice tea and lily of the valley follow; sandalwood, orris, musk and vetiver remain. It is sweet the way honeyed tea is sweet, not the way vanilla or caramel is. The chapter tells the morning, the afternoon and the night of that March day.
221B and Shadow Éclat, for two readers of the same stories
The two were made as a pair from Conan Doyle’s stories. 221B is the light, drawn from Sherlock Holmes: clean, polished leather softened by rose and osmanthus, over birch tar and tobacco. The birch tar here is not smoky; it leaves a faint haze over the leather. Shadow Éclat is the shadow, drawn from James Moriarty: a soft suede leather among geranium, rose, iris and osmanthus, with immortelle and black pepper beneath. Shadow Éclat was first shown in December 2024, at Rei’s exhibition Letters from 221B Baker Street: Scents of Shadow. Each is sold on its own. Their shared chapter is Duality.
Béton Chaud, for someone who grew up outdoors
Béton chaud is French for “hot concrete”. Béton Chaud comes from childhood summers in the early 2000s: children sitting inside concrete pipes on an empty lot, the walls warm from the sun, watching kites overhead. Peach, orange and pink grapefruit open dry rather than fresh; cumin, caramel and Damask rose form the middle; cinnamon, star anise, frankincense, cardamom and vanilla stay on the skin. No colourant is added: the amber in the glass comes from the raw materials.
Which size for them
- 2 ml: a single sample, once the set has narrowed the choice.
- 12 ml: the size for a handbag or a trip, in a round dark brown case with R PARFUMS on the front. See the smaller sizes.

Payment: Bank Transfer by VietQR (VND) or Credit Card (USD).
If it is not quite right
The person who received the bottle can exchange it, unsprayed, for another scent, bottle or size, within the 14-day change-of-mind window. The 14 days count from the day the order arrived or the bottle was bought at the counter, not the day it was given. They only need the name or phone number of the person who bought it. Opening the box to look at the bottle does not affect this; spraying the bottle ends it. Refunds always go to the person who paid.
A 2 ml sample with its vial opened, or a Discovery Set with any vial opened, cannot be returned, for hygiene reasons. The full terms are under Returns.
