Scent me the journey records a conversation with Rei Nguyen in Saigon after the launch of R Parfums, taking the scents one by one.
Eau de Hajime was Rei’s earliest scent; the writer finds it soft, green and juicy. 221B came last, named after the house number of Sherlock Holmes, Rei’s idol: tidy leather, a hint of osmanthus, a tobacco finish. Nostalgic March took the most work, recalling March in Hanoi and sugarcane steeped with pomelo blossom. Béton Chaud is the ‘bravest’, with cumin; Pluviophile is the scent of rain.
