Ink drawing: a dragonfly seen from above, wings spread, its body a single straight line.

As a child, I often wondered, “Where does the rain come from? And where does it go?” Countless times, I imagined the adventures a single raindrop went through just to reach the earth from the sky. I still believe each raindrop has its own lifetime. This life, and countless more to come. For this second chapter of “Pluviophile”, I let dragonfly wings carry me to wander here and there with the rain. I don’t expect it to be a happy raindrop, but rather, one that lives its life to the fullest. Through these five scents, I wish to share those feelings with you. With love and rain.

Scent #1: On the wingbeat

Ink drawing: slanting streaks of rain, one round drop falling at the end.

The raindrop opened its eyes after a long journey. A voice called out:

Dragonfly – Hi there, are you okay?

Rain – Thank you, I’m doing great. Thanks for catching me.

Dragonfly – Don’t worry, you’re very light anyway. Just stay right here on my wing, I can take you here and there. How long will you be staying?

Rain – I’m not really sure, I guess it all depends on the sun.

Dragonfly – Then that’s long enough, right?

Scent #2: Longing in the rain

Ink drawing: a dragonfly tilting in flight, its four thin wings open.

Rain – How much longer will we be here?

The raindrop asked.

Dragonfly – Not much longer. I’ve been on this branch since two winds ago. Dragonfly wings aren’t made to fly against the wind, you know.

Rain – Yeah, let’s wait together then.

A restless breeze blew past; the dragonfly wing, dotted with the silvery raindrop, quivered gently.

Scent #3: A Date

Ink drawing: a bare branch curving into the air, a small dragonfly flying above it.

With a lift of the wings, the raindrop felt its body grow weightless again, floating softly in the open air.

Rain – Where are we off to, Dragonfly?

Dragonfly – To see someone very dear to me. I think you’ll really like them too, Rain.

Rain – I see. They must have been waiting through the entire rain then.

Dragonfly – Since way before the rain even arrived!

Through the silver wing, Rain watched a soft pink hue emerge. Gentle and breathtakingly beautiful.

Scent #4: The Waltz

Ink drawing: a lotus opening above a pale wash of water, a dragonfly close by.

With another tilt of the wings, Rain realized the flower that had visited its dreams so many times before.

Dragonfly – Hello, Lotus.

With the purest smile, Lotus gently rustled its petals, whispering in reply:

Lotus – Hello, dear friend. The rain didn’t wear you out, I hope?

– Hello, Rain. I’m so glad you came to visit.

Dragonfly tilted its wing, and Rain slid gently into the flower’s embrace.

Never before had Rain thought it could have color and scent. But for just a few brief moments, Rain truly felt like a Pink Raindrop, alive with the warmth of summer and sweet nectar.

The dragonfly wing nestled close. So gentle, so warm.

Scent #5: Where does the rain go?

Ink drawing: loops of ink like drops of water gathering, one drop set apart below.

Dragonfly – Rain, you’re sparkling. You look so beautiful.

Dragonfly said.

Lotus – There’s a whole rainbow inside you.

Lotus said gently.

Rain – It’s all thanks to the sun. The storm has completely cleared now. It’s time for me to go.

Dragonfly – Will we meet again in the next rain?

Rain – I don’t know, but the next rain will surely carry my memories with it.

Dragonfly – Yes, we’ll meet again somewhere.
